Semi-autonomous Holiday Homes

The debate about the true definition of zero carbon homes continues. For some it is an accounting trick using ‘offsetting’ by purchasing ‘green’ energy. To others it means creating renewable energy to supply all ones needs.

Whilst the bean-counters argue it out, we have designed a pair of holiday homes which, will be nearly autonomous, meaning as close to being self-sufficient in energy as is reasonably possible. The properties are near Faversham, located just outside a village so as to provide a beautiful and peaceful retreat for visitors.

The building is earth bermed, following principles proven by Brenda and Robert Vale, and the Hockerton Housing Project, but with improved insulation, glazing and airtightness in accordance with Passivhaus principles.

Renewable energy is provided by solar thermal for hot water, solar PV for electricity, wind turbine for electricity, and a battery store. A back up LPG powered generator is proposed, using the fuel also shared with the gas hobs and ovens.

Minimal heating is required, so a small wood pellet boiler is shared by the two units to heat hot water and provide warm air through a mechanical ventilation unit with heat recovery.

The property is too far from the grid for affordable connections, making the renewable sources far more attractive than usual.
